The Challenges Facing Mass Transit for Detectable Warning Tiles: Maintaining Compliance, Safety, & Functionality
These are the main challenges facing all detectable warning tiles. However, for mass transit, meeting these challenges faces obstacles to a degree that is unique to the industry. Maintaining compliance and functionality will avoid logistical complications for the Engineer/Architect/Contractor, as well as liability issues.
Selecting the right TACTILE WARNING SURFACE INDICATORS
To address today’s demands as well as future Mass Transit projects, designers must select detectable warning tiles that will withstand the continuous high volume of pedestrian traffic, vehicle vibrations, as well as mobility devices and other machinery at the platform edge.
TekWay has a full line of detectable warning products for Mass Transit applications such as domes, pre-warning tiles, and direction and navigational bars.
Bull-Nose Tiles
TekWay manufactures detectable warning surfaces for both platform edge and recessed designs. Both the straight edge tile and the popular bull-nose edge are available in staggered and in-line patterns.
Designed for platform edge installations, the bull-nose tile minimizes the impact of chipping and breakage caused by heavy-wheeled carts and mobility devices. The rounded edge provides and enhances a secure ledge from the platform to the public transportation vehicle.

Recessed Straight Tiles
Commonly used at bus and streetcar stops, straight edge tiles make the transition from street to sidewalk much more fluid. The Detectable Warning Surface tiles are installed in the sidewalk behind the curb line and will extend to the length of the boarding area of the bus or streetcar.

Tactile Pre-Warning Strips
The purpose of the tactile pre-warning strips is to create a color contrast between the detectable warning tile and the surrounding platform surface. Placed purposefully before the warning dome, paved strips signal to pedestrians to use caution when approaching the platform.
The pre-warning tiles are generally black in color, come in various dimensions, and provide the same slip resistance value as the tactile domes.

Tactile Direction Indicators
A surface comprised of raised, parallel, flat-topped, elongated bars indicating an unobstructed path of travel where there are no natural guidelines, specifically for Mass Transit Platforms. When pedestrians who are blind or who have low vision encounter a strip of TDI (raised bars), they should understand that this is a surface they can follow to an intermediate or final destination. They can choose to cross it or to follow it on either side. The TDI does not imply that there is any danger. Small areas of TDI may indicate a transit stop, or where the transit door will open.
